Organization Description

Ready for Life was established specifically to provide foster care children with the life skills they require along with safe havens for personal growth and physical care. Our mission is to touch and impact upon the individual lives of every child we meet. Be it big or small, that impact has a positive and enduring affect on their lives... and on the community in which they live. The more children are supported and guided, the better parents, workers, and advocates they become.

Program Information

Our Foster Family Agency has been serving children & families in the Northern California region for 20+ years. We recruit & train Resource Families (formerly foster families) using the Structured Analysis Family Evaluation (SAFE). As a private agency, we can take placement of children from anywhere in the state. When we receive a referral for a child we then begin the matching process to determine if they would be a good fit in any of our homes. If a child is placed with our agency, we then work in tandem with the placing county while the birth family works their case plan. We provide case management services for the child & family, as well as provide visitation at our office. Our newest program, Host Homes, works with housing unstable youth (ages 18-24). We identify families or individuals in the community who are willing to temporarily house the youth, while they work with our case manager toward the ultimate goal of permanent housing. As an intern, you would be involved in case managment, program development, and implementation.

As a private, non-profit agency, it sometimes requires an "all-hands-on-deck" approach to certain situations. We are looking for student interns who are willing to jump in and assist staff with projects, crisis intervention, and case management. Although at times things can be unpredictable and ever-changing, there are also mundane, mental tasks which are necessary in the work we do (reports, case notes, sorting donations, research, training, etc.). As an organization, we are very flexible and value our employee's time and encourage a healthy work-life balance. Someone who is comfortable asking questions, "going with the flow", and being part of a team would fit well in our agency.

Health & Safety

Due to the nature of the work we do, we are always engaging with people in one capacity or another. With this, there are natural risks involved including potentially encountering an upset birth parent during, before, or after a visit with their children. The home visits a student would participate in are approved families whose homes have been inspected and are considered in compliance. A student working with our Host Homes program would potentially encounter young adults in crisis, who often have few coping skills. This often requires you to think on your feet and adapt to their mood at the moment.
