Goat Grazing and Rangeland Management at Fort Ord National MonumentAt — Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
Monitor grassland biomass and biodiversity to evaluate the success of targeted goat grazing at four sites within the wildland-urban interface on Fort Ord National Monument (FONM). Biomass data collection and biodiversity surveys occur before and after goat grazing efforts using a combination of established and novel field methods. Additionally, there are opportunities for data entry, analysis, and mapping using Excel, R, and GIS. By the end of this position students will have learned how to build and use appropriate fencing equipment, collect biomass samples, and identify grassland species.

Students will be trained to maintain fence enclosures with specific tools, collect and process vegetative biomass samples, and identify grassland plants.
We will teach students to safely and effectively use fencing equipment. We will support new experiences in the field by asking and answering questions about the FONM and significance of our grassland research.
KNOWN HAZARDS: This placement requires working with hazardous materials, heavy equipment, construction equipment, heights, or heavy machinery.
Service learners will be asked to take the Unexploded Munitions Identification (UXO) Training. No one working or volunteering on Fort Ord has ever been hurt by explosives (and few people ever see them outside of exclusion zones) but to be safe everyone needs a brief training to know what they look like and avoid them if ever seen. Heavy tools and machinery may be used during this opportunity, and we will provide full training on specific tools as needed.
