Oak Woodland Restoration of Fort Ord National MonumentAt — Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
Service learners will get hands-on field experience restoring oak woodlands of Fort Ord National Monument (FONM). Woodlands on FONM primarily consist of two species, Live oaks and Valley Oaks. Service learners will locate, identify, map, and protect these oaks by building goat exclusion fencing. This work will determine where the Bureau of Land Management should focus planting new trees. This is a valuable field opportunity to work off-trail in some of the most beautiful and biodiverse places the Monterey Bay has to offer. Common sights include birds of prey, wildflowers, and scenic vistas.
Shifts:
- Fridays from 8 to 12:30pm
-
Students will need to meet BLM staff at the FONM office.
1 service learner spot still available (Fall 2024)
We do not consider our SL opportunities to be competitive, but we do request that SLers have great communication and time management throughout the semester.
Students will be trained in oak tree identification, using GPS devices, updating GIS maps, fence building, and tree planting techniques.
The project lead will safely lead the team to create a fun outdoor work environment. There will be direct supervision of service-learners at all times by staff. Staff will also coordinate volunteers and will be available to answer any questions relating to the project and ecological related topics such as bird identification.
Service learners will be asked to take the Unexploded Munitions Identification (UXO) Training. No one working or volunteering on Fort Ord has ever been hurt by explosives (and few people ever see them outside of exclusion zones) but to be safe everyone needs a brief training to know what they look like and avoid them if ever seen.
