Learning opportunities at St. Elizabeth include:

  • Assist with post acute placement on complex discharges
  • Engagement and coordination with other agencies including skilled nursing facilities, home health facilities, medical equipment suppliers, and other community based agencies
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounding to discuss patient status and discharge plan
  • Engage as a part of a team including with physicians, case managers, nursing staff, county agencies, community resources, patients, and families
  • Address ethical challenges and complex social and medical issues

The ideal student intern would have excellent customer service skills, interpersonal and written communication skills, ability to think critically and problem solve, ability to manage and prioritize various tasks or projects, ability to work independently and as part of a team, detail oriented, ability to work in a fast paced environment and adjust priorities as needed, be eager to learn about the behavioral and systems theories and how they are relevant to healthcare including end-of-life dynamics, working with victims of abuse/neglect, knowledge of or ability to learn about SSDI, SSI, SDI, and other resources, ability to learn about and adhere to Title 22 requirements as they pertain to hospital social work and dicharge planning. 

Health & Safety

Working with acutely ill patients can be difficult emotionally. Patients have medical emergencies in the hospital requiring CPR. Patients sometimes die. Social workers in the hospital often are called upon to have difficult conversations with patients and families. Patients and visitors may become aggressive and/or verbally or physically assaultive. In the hospital you will potentially be expose to communicable diseases.
