CoachAt — Girls on the Run Bay Area
Girls on the Run is an evidence-based community program that inspires all girls to build their confidence, kindness, and decision making skills. Every Spring and Fall season we need volunteer coaches to lead elementary and middle school girls through our specific program and curriculum at various school sites around the Bay Area! We especially want college and university students as coaches who can provide peer leadership and mentorship to Bay Area girls and who have similar backgrounds and experiences as the girls we serve. The coaching time commitment includes a 10 week practice schedule of 1-2 days a week, during after-school hours, for 75-90 minutes and a celebratory Bay Area wide 5K event at the end of each season. Coaches can be any gender identity and don't need to be a runner to coach, just a desire to mentor girls from 3rd to 8th grade!
How to effectively provide mentorship to girls from various backgrounds; collaborate with co-coaches and junior coaches; prepare and facilitate weekly lessons; communicate with parents/guardians of participants; create and implement a community-based service project.
Our training consists of a self-paced online component and a live meeting that lasts for a few hours, depending on the number of volunteers at the given training. We offer multiple in-person trainings around the Bay Area a few weeks prior to the start of each Spring/Fall season. The trainings cover basic safety information for girls and coaches, resources of who to contact for support at Girls on the Run Bay Area, and interpersonal workshops regarding social backgrounds and experiences to better serve girls.
Volunteers will be provided safety information and guidelines during training and will have continued access with the provided handbook. Volunteers will also have the contact information for Girls on the Run Bay Area staff and can contact any staff regarding safety questions or concerns. Students are no longer required to wear facial masks for COVID and volunteers can choose to do so or not. This position may involved running and body movement, so volunteers will need to be aware of the possible risks with such activities.
The link to the application can be found at www.gotrbayarea.org/coach, along with other frequently asked questions about the application process and coaching experience. Once the application is submitted, a Girls on the Run Bay Area representative will contact volunteers to discuss the application and next steps. A background check, negative TB test, and proof of COVID vaccine are required. Girls on the Run covers the cost of the background check, CPR and First Aid certification (if necessary), and up to $30 for the TB test.
