English as a Second Language (ESL) Teaching VolunteerAt — Monterey Peace and Justice Center (MPJC)

Opportunity Summary

We will be teaching English classes twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7pm at the Monterey Peace and Justice Center in Seaside. Our students range in their English proficiency, but most students have a basic English level and speak Spanish as their native language.  MPJC volunteer, Ciara Post, teaches this class.

In Ciara's teaching, she employs methods of critical literacy and democratization of the classroom through student-centered pedagogy, conversation, games, and media analysis. To Ciara, teaching English is at its essence supporting your community to gain the skills to more effectively advocate for their own economic, social, and political mobility. In the classroom, she works to find commonality across difference and moments of connection, laughter, and kindness.

Ciara is looking for one to two teaching assistants who can support her in lesson planning and teaching. This an opportunity to be creative, take real leadership, and build strong relationships.

Opportunity Training

ESL teacher, Ciara Post, is happy to meet via zoom in advance of the start of volunteering to discuss approach and pedagogy. For the first class, service learners will sit in and observe. After seeing how class is run, we can move forward with more leadership on their part.

We can meet via zoom when needed to discuss how classes are going, what you think is going well and/or could be improved, and what support you may need. We can also meet before and/or after classes to discuss these same themes.
