Chico State Formerly Incarcerated Student Success Program

Program Information

Chico State is in the early stages of starting a Project Rebound, which is a student success program for prospective and current CSU students who are or have been incarcerated. Read more about Project Rebound here

Project Rebound offers wraparound case managment services to those who are or who have been incarcerated to help them succeed in college and in their careers after college. Services provided by the Chico State Formerly Incarcerated Student Success Program will include:

  • Basic needs: housing support, financial support, mental health/trauma support, etc.
  • Academic Support for prospective and current students: transfer credit support, study skills, support connecting with campus agencies such as financial aid, advising, etc.
  • Outreach: building connections with prisons, jails, rehabilitation centers, probation departments, community colleges, and other places where prospective students can be found
  • Other: post-grad career support, outreach to larger Chico State community to help end stigma of those who have been incarcerated

This is a new program, which will be developed as we go. We prefer interns who are willing to work collaboratively to develop their job description and the program, who are willing to shift gears and take on new tasks as needed, and who have a passion for supporting those who have been incarcerated obtain higher education degrees and post-graduation careers.

There is one paid internship open to formely incarcerated or system-impacted MSW students (preference given to formely incarcerated students). Unpaid internships are open to formerly incarcerated, system-impacted undergraduate or graduate students, as well as other students who want to support those who are or have been incarcerated.

We define formerly incarcerated and system-impacted using the definitions from the Underground Scholars Language Guide for Communicating About Those Involved in the Carceral System. Formerly Incarcerated Person refers to anyone who has been in a carceral setting (prison, immigration detention centers, local jails, juvenile detention centers, etc.) and is now released. System Impacted includes those who have been incarcerated, those with arrests/convictions but no incarceration, and those who have been directly impacted by a loved one being incarcerated.

The goal of the program in year one is to work with current Chico State students and to outreach to prisons, jails, rehabilitation centers, and other places where prospetive students might be located.
