Program Information The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program at CSU, Chico is committed to increasing the rates of academic achievement, retention, and graduation among historically underrepresented students. This is accomplished by providing holistic and individualized support services that maximize students’ innate abilities and draw upon available resources within and outside of the University to benefit students, families, and the larger community.
TRIO SSS works with a diverse student population who come with multiple strengths and areas for improvement. Most of our student participants are first-generation, low-income students who are first in their families to pursue a higher education degree. For most of them, it is their first time building on healthy study habits, academic routines, and more importantly, learning how to live on their own. It is their first exposure to "independence." This comes with a lot of challenges for our participants, sometimes pushing them to feel burn out in academia, stress, anxiety, and impostor syndrome. The MSW intern would have opportunities to create spaces for our participants to express how they feel and the challenges they are going through while creating a sense of community with our TRIO students. Other areas of professional level learning opportunities include project management, conflict-resolution, personnel management, etc.
There are a lot of moving pieces when working with students, and although we do our best at planning for services and events accordingly, sometimes, things go differently. We appreciate the flexibility and adaptability to changes within the office and program services. We also appreciate folks that are able to take lead and initiative on projects assigned. We are fully supportive of our staff's professional development and also appreciate the space to learn from one another.
