Assistant Fish Culturist - MBSTPAt — Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project (MBSTP)
Service learning students with the Monterey Bay Salmon & Trout Project (MBSTP) will aid in the rearing and spawning of Coho salmon at our hatchery for release into the Monterey Bay. Students will learn how to feed salmon, maintain a flow through hatchery, identify and treat fish health issues, check females for spawning viability, collect milt from male salmon, fertilize salmon eggs, and incubate and care for developing salmon eggs through the fry stage.

Requirements:
- Own, reliable transportation to hatchery location
- Dress / attire for highly variable weather in a remote location
Training includes how to feed salmon, maintain a flow through hatchery, identify and treat fish health issues, check females for spawning viability, collect milt from male salmon, fertilize salmon eggs, and incubate and care for developing salmon eggs through the fry stage.
By training thoroughly and having students observe activities first, then supervising closely while students perform the duties themselves, and lastly providing guidance or corrective instruction when necessary, while always commending their efforts.
The winter can get cold back here, so check weather forcasts and dress accordingly.
