Sutter County Public Health - Homeless Services Unit

Organization Description

Sutter-Yuba Behavioral Health (SYBH) provides services to individuals and families who are experiencing serious or ongoing mental health and/or substance use disorders in Yuba and Sutter Counties.

Program Information

The Homeless Services Unit is strategically placed within the Public Health Division of Sutter County's Health and Human Services Department which addresses homelessness within our community through the lens of health and wellbeing.

Through the Homeless Services Unit (HSU), students will be introduced to individuals experiencing homelessness, and the intensive case management services provided to help these individuals obtain medical care, housing, income and other needed services. Part of the work of the HSU is building collaborative relationships with other community providers and educating stakeholders on the facts vs myths surrounding homelessness. Advocacy is a huge part of serving our clientele and there are no shortages of options to do so.  As a public government agency, there is ample opportunity to collect, analyze data for the purpose of applying for grants as well as learning and understanding program impacts within our community.

Our ability to accept unpaid interns or volunteers would be dependent upon availability for staff oversight.

The ideal student will have a calm demeanor, be compassionate, have firm boundaries, sound judgement, be non-judgmental, and willing to advocate and be flexible.

Health & Safety

Participants often have co-ocurring mental health and substance use disorders which can make behavior unpredictable at times. Encounters with comunicable diseases are also a possibility.
