Fort Ord National Monument Invasive Weed Crew AssistantAt — Bureau of Land Management (BLM)

Opportunity Summary 

Service Learners will be working with the invasive weeds crew at Fort Ord National Monument to survey for and remove invasive plants. They will hike off trail surveying portions of Fort Ord, sometimes using maps on GPS tablets to navigate and locate known infestations. They will also assist in removing target species using tools like Pulaskis, Weed Wrenches, and their hands. New infestations when discovered will be mapped using GPS tablets, including collecting data on species life cycle and quantity of plants. This data will be used to create new maps for future surveying efforts.

Opportunity Training 

Training will include:

  • Using ArcGIS Field Maps to navigate to known infestations and taking data for new infestations
  • Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) training
  • The use of tools like Pulaskis and Weed Wrenches
  • Identification of target invasive weeds such as Iceplant, Pampas/Jubata grass, French Broom, Russian Thistle, Yellow star Thistle, and Stinkwort
  • Native plant identification

Service Learners will be working with a permanent member of the weed crew at all times. The weed crew member will train and assist the service learners with field tasks.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

This placement requires working with hazardous materials, heavy equipment, construction equipment, heights, or heavy machinery. Service Learners will be working in areas that contain Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) hazards.
