Opportunity Summary 

Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) is seeking an energetic part-time Teaching Assistant to engage elementary-aged girls and support Head Teachers in teaching hands-on STEM activities in-person at public schools in the East Bay (Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Richmond). A teaching credential is not required. If you’re passionate about helping shape our next generation of scientists - we'd love to have you! All classes are fun, hands-on and designed to inspire girls to love STEM! LOGISTICS: This is a part-time, in-person, hourly position. Commitment: 20 hours 5 days per week from September 2024 - June 6, 2025. There may be a possibility to extend into the summer. Hours: after school hours (approximately 2:00 - 5:30pm) Days: Monday through Friday Start Date: September 3, 2024 Expectation: 1) Have a reliable vehicle and valid driver's license to get to the school sites. 2) Clearance of background check and negative TB Test. The STEM Teaching Assistant will report directly to the Director of Programs. RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve as support to Head Teachers to deliver project-based, in-person STEM lessons Ensure attendance sheets are up-to date on a weekly basis Read the facilitator guide for the science project and coordinate with the Head teacher ahead of class time regarding the project for each class and how you can best assist. Lead attendance taking for each class Take photos during class to provide to the Head Teacher who will share with the parents/caregivers. Actively build relationships with students, focusing on socio-emotional development and individual strengths Assist with STEM kitting in our Berkeley Offices when needed QUALIFICATIONS: Working towards a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree A minimum of one year of experience with children in some capacity Commitment to educational equity and programming for girls Ability to maintain an excellent work ethic, a high level of energy and enthusiasm Possess a valid driver's license and a reliable car Spanish is a plus, but not mandatory. ABOUT US: SAfG serves girls in Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grades. Our mission is to remove systemic barriers to all girls’ participation in STEM starting in kindergarten by introducing, sparking and building their interest through hands-on learning. Our programs increase their positive attitudes toward STEM and equip them with 21st century skills. In schools throughout the East Bay, SAfG provides hands-on, high quality after-school STEM programming while girls are young so they’ll stay engaged in STEM for the long term.
