Collections Inventory AssistantAt — Museum on Main/Amador-Livermore Valley Historical Society
Students will assist in an inventory of the museum’s artifact collection, comparing the physical objects in storage and on display to the museum’s digital and paper records, and updating the digital records to reflect the project’s findings. This opportunity provides an introduction to museum collections work that can help prepare a student for other work in museum collections management.

Basic principles of museum collections management, policies and procedures for museum collections inventory auditing, best practices in artifact handling and storage, adapting best practices to existing conditions, working with collections management software in general and the PastPefect application in particular.
Students will be trained in reading and interpreting collections database reports, safe handling and packing of museum artifacts, examination of collections objects to identify catalog numbers and other markings, use of the PastPerfect museum management software application for collections management, and basic museum safety and security policies and procedures.
Students will be working with a variety of objects, including items that are sharp, fragile, or heavy. They will be trained in safe handling of these items and provided with artifact handling gloces that provide limited protection to both object and handler.
