Policy InternAt — Alameda County Public Health Department - Tobacco Control Program
Alameda County Tobacco Control Program provides tobacco education and policy support to limit the availability of tobacco products, reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, and decrease tobacco-related racial inequities. We are seeking policy interns to assist with tobacco control policy activities in cities throughout the county. This includes doing data collection, community engagement and local advocacy work in Alameda County.

1) In how to assist with local tobacco control policies, including developing resources for communities working towards ending the sale of commercial tobacco products to limit access, and smoke-free housing policies to reduce secondhand smoke exposure. 2) Conducting local research, developing community outreach materials, and other functions to ensure community members are educated on potential tobacco control policies. 3) Be locally involved and attend coalition meetings and participating in workgroups to foster community relationships and community engagement. 4) How to work in a government agency and provide administrative support for the program’s smoke-free housing complaint process.
Students will be given an orientation on local politics in Alameda County, tobacco policy 101, and will shadow supervisors to learn more about civic engagement and public health practices.
