Program Information

*This practicum is open to MSW Foundation & Concentration year students.

Our social work practicum provides MSW students with professional-level learning opportunities to prepare for impactful careers in school-based mental health. Interns will gain experience in all three tiers of mental health services, from prevention to intensive intervention. They will develop key clinical skills, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment plan creation, and therapeutic interventions. Interns will also lead small groups, conduct crisis interventions, and engage families to support holistic student well-being.

In addition, students will gain expertise in case management, foster youth services, and McKinney-Vento/homeless services, equipping them to address the unique challenges faced by vulnerable populations. For those pursuing a Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential, the practicum offers opportunities to work with students across different age groups, enhancing their versatility and readiness for diverse educational environments. This experience provides a robust foundation for professional social work practice in schools and beyond.

Students placed in our agency will thrive with personal qualities that reflect empathy, adaptability, and a strong commitment to equity and student well-being. Ideal candidates are compassionate and culturally responsive, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students, families, and school staff. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential, as interns will work within multidisciplinary teams across districts.

Resilience and self-awareness are also key, as interns will encounter complex challenges such as crisis situations and the needs of foster and homeless youth. A proactive attitude, openness to feedback, and a growth mindset will help students navigate the dynamic nature of school-based mental health work. Finally, organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively are critical for balancing multiple responsibilities, such as case management, group facilitation, and clinical documentation. These qualities will enable students to succeed and make a meaningful impact during their practicum.
