Central Valley High School

Organization Description

Gateway offers all grade levels K-12 along with Transitional Kindergarten (TK) programs. Gateway's TK programs offer success even for our youngest learners.

Program Information

Our school provides interns with hands-on experience in social work within educational settings. Through involvement in SSTs, SARTs, IEPs, planning meetings, and addressing student issues, interns will gain valuable skills.

Interns will learn how to collaborate with school staff, teachers, and parents to support students. They'll develop skills in assessing student needs, creating individualized plans, and adjusting strategies based on progress. Interns will also gain experience in conflict resolution, mediation, and communication, helping students navigate peer relationships and challenging situations.

They'll strengthen their problem-solving abilities and gain an understanding of educational laws and policies. This experience helps interns apply theoretical knowledge in real-world situations, preparing them for a career in school social work.

Empathy is essential, as it helps in understanding and sharing the feelings of others, fostering trust and strong relationships. Patience is crucial since progress in social work can be slow, and persistence is often required. Active listening is vital, as it ensures that the social worker fully understands the concerns and needs of students. Cultural competency is important, allowing social workers to respect cultural differences and understand how these impact people's experiences. Strong problem-solving skills are necessary to creatively address complex challenges and find practical solutions. Resilience is needed to manage the emotional demands of the job while continuing to support students effectively. Ethical integrity is a cornerstone, ensuring confidentiality and respect for students' rights. The ability to use collaboration is a must to provide holistic support.

Health & Safety

A school setting may bring difficulty with students and parents that misplace anger or aggression, or be placed in a high-stress environment. Additionally, there could be the risk of emotional burnout from handling sensitive student issues or navigating complex family dynamics.
