Intership at Small Immigration Defense Law FirmAt — The Community Law Office

Opportunity Summary 

We are seeking an intern to support our law firm in providing direct legal services to immigrant populations, including unaccompanied children, refugees, and individuals facing removal. The intern will assist the attorney in provision of services to noncitizen clients. The intern will receive training on unaccompanied children, legal status determinations, and immigration court processes among other topics. The intern will play a key role in providing organizational support to staff, conducting background research, writing summaries, and communicating with clients. This internship offers valuable real-world experience in the immigration legal sphere. Interns must commit to at least 10 hours a week for one semester, however we will accommodate students’ schedules and academic requirements to tailor the internship according to their education requirements.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

1. The intern will become familiar with U.S and California immigration law and the various routes through which immigrants pursue legalization. 2. The intern will learn about the inner workings of immigration law firms, the processes involved in presenting legal defense, and the requirements of legal writing and research. 3. Intern will understand best practices for providing client-centered, trauma-informed, culturally responsive services. 4. Intern will develop skills such as problem solving, organization, legal writing, research, and client relations. 5. The intern will learn how to manage direct service with documentation requirements.

Opportunity Training 

Students will be trained on relevant immigration law topics, functionality and organization administrative agencies and state and federal courts.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

We work with vulnerable populations, some of whom have experienced severe trauma. Interns will be exposed to difficult topics and will provided support to navigate those topics, but should be aware that they may hear difficult things when working with immigration communities.
