Bright Futures for Youth

Program Information

Bright Futures for Youth is a community-focused nonprofit organization committed to addressing the ever-changing needs of youth, from sixth-graders to those in their mid-20s in Nevada County.

Bright Futures for Youth will be able to provide BSW students with opportunities to develop foundational competencies in generalist social work practice. Learning opportunities include:

  • understanding of organizational structure & service delivery models
  • learn to complete client documentation, intake forms, case notes, and case plans ensuring confidentiality
  • provide case management services including needs assessments and resource linkage
  • assist in facilitating ILS workshops & support groups
  • participate in interdisciplinary team meetings
  • engage in community outreach to promote BFFY's services
  • conduct research to support agency projects
  • receive regular supervision

Skills learned include verbal & written communication, cultural competence, ethical practice, and time management.

Interns will thrive if they possess the following qualities & characteristics: Flexibility, we serve youth with diverse needs and evolving needs, interns must adapt to both structured and unstructured days; have initiative & willingness to jump in - encouraged to take an active role in learning & service delivery; ability to work in chaotic or unpredictable environments - navigating emotionally intense or fast changing situations, while remaining calm, responsive, & supportive; willingness to ask questions & seek supervision; cultural humility & openness to learning - nonjudgemental approach, willingness to learn from clients and colleagues. 

Health & Safety

While not a common experience at BFFY, we do occasionally have clients who are experiencing crisis or are under the influence & act aggressively. We have procedures in place for these situations. We are also located in a rural area, so there may be times when they have to travel on country/gravel roads to get to clients.
