Program Information

The Special Education Department of Sutter County Superintendent of Schools Office is dedicated to providing excellent support and services to special needs students that promote optimum self-sufficiency while addressing their unique needs. 

Intern opportunities available for Social Work students in our Special Education Department: 

  • Counseling techniques tailored to students with disabilities 
  • Multidisciplinary teamwork and collaboration 
  • Advocacy for student rights and access to services
  • Case management
  • Insight into state and federal laws related to special education
  • Learn de-escalation techniques and trauma informed practices 
  • Participate and learn about IEPs
  • Learn to conduct and interpret social-emotional, behavioral, and adaptive assessments
  • Document observations, services, and progress in accordance with school and county policies
  • Address mental health needs and learn how to intervene with students with disbilities
  • Social skills implementation in the group setting 
  • Macro level work would include understanding and observation of schools and learning about the decision making and funding in county offices

When working in schools, individuals need to possess the following:

  • Flexibility and adaptability to different environments
  • Things move fast in the school environment, so a willingness to ask for help or ask questions
  • Patience to understand different students and move at a slower pace at times
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students, families, and staff
  • Openess to feedback and motivation to learn
  • Team oriented
Health & Safety

May occassionally encounter students exhibiting aggression, loud vocalization, challenges with boundaries, and medical procedures on some students.
