Outreach and Community EngagementAt — Women's Resource Center
The Outreach opportunity at the Women’s Resource Center of North County (WRC) provides students with hands-on experience in community engagement, advocacy, prevention, and ethical social media support related to domestic violence, sexual assault, and homelessness. Students may assist with outreach efforts including community events, resource distribution, prevention education preparation, partnership development, and the creation of general awareness content for WRC’s social media platforms.
By the end of this opportunity, students will have learned how to support survivor-centered services through ethical outreach and community engagement. Students will gain experience in trauma-informed practice, confidentiality, and professional boundaries while working in a survivor-serving organization. They will develop skills in community outreach, advocacy, and prevention education, as well as support ethical, non-identifying social media and digital outreach focused on awareness and resource sharing. Students will also learn why strict safety protocols are essential when working with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, including the prohibition of photography, video, or identifying content. Through supervision and reflection, students will strengthen communication, teamwork, and an understanding of how outreach connects individuals and communities to critical support services.
Students will receive a structured onboarding and orientation prior to beginning their placement. Training includes an overview of WRC’s mission and programs, confidentiality and survivor safety protocols, trauma-informed and survivor-centered practices, professional boundaries, and ethical conduct. Students are trained on expectations related to working with sensitive populations, including the strict prohibition of photography, video, audio recording, or sharing identifying information. Additional training may include community outreach procedures, cultural humility, mandated reporting guidelines, and appropriate communication when discussing domestic violence, sexual assault, and homelessness. Students supporting digital or social media outreach receive guidance on ethical messaging, content approval processes, and non-identifying awareness practices. Ongoing supervision, check-ins, and support are provided throughout the opportunity to ensure student learning, accountability, and safety.
This opportunity occurs within a survivor-serving organization supporting individuals impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault. Client safety and confidentiality are essential. Photography, video, audio recording, and social media documentation are strictly prohibited in client service areas and during any client-related activities. Students must follow all confidentiality policies, trauma-informed practices, and professional boundaries. Direct client interaction occurs only within defined roles and under staff supervision. Students are not responsible for crisis response and must immediately report any safety concerns to their supervisor.
Students interested in this opportunity are required to submit a current resume as part of the application. Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a brief 15–20 minute phone interview to discuss availability, interests, and alignment with the opportunity. Additional instructions will be provided to applicants as needed.
