Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary: Service Learning in TK- 5 ClassroomsAt — San Marcos Unified School District
San Marcos Unified School District offers a wide range of meaningful service-learning opportunities for students across all grade levels. Students may support classrooms in elementary, middle, and high schools by assisting teachers with instructional activities, small-group work, and enrichment projects. There are also opportunities to provide targeted support to students in Special Education programs and to English Learners, helping with academic practice, language development, and inclusive classroom activities. These experiences allow students to give back to their school community while building empathy, leadership skills, and a deeper understanding of diverse learning needs.
By the end of this service-learning opportunity, college students will have earned their required hours while gaining hands-on experience in a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classroom. Volunteers will learn how early-childhood classrooms are structured and how routines, play-based learning, and developmental milestones support young learners’ growth. With guidance from the TK teacher, students will assist with small-group activities, early literacy and language development, learning centers, art projects, and positive behavior supports. They will strengthen skills in communication, patience, and age-appropriate interaction while practicing professional expectations such as confidentiality, reliability, and teamwork. Volunteers will also learn strategies for supporting diverse learners, including English Learners and students with varying social-emotional needs. Overall, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of child development and education careers, plus documented service hours that contribute to their college requirements. Participants will receive feedback from staff, reflect on service, and build experience to reference on resumes and applications
