Helen Wilcox Elementary

Program Information

Helen Wilcox Elementary School serves approximately 600 (grades TK-3) students in a diverse, high-need Title I school community. Approximately 40% of students identify as White, 39% Hispanic/Latino, and 13% as two or more races, with smaller percentages of Asian, American Indian/Alaska Native, Filipino, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander students. About 83% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, with additional student groups including English learners, students with disabilities, and a small number experiencing homelessness or foster care involvement. Within this setting, social work interns will gain hands-on experience supporting students impacted by poverty, trauma, and other social stressors.

Under the supervision of the school counselor, interns will observe and assist with individual and small group counseling, support social-emotional learning and Tier 2 interventions, participate in Student Success Team meetings, collaborate with school staff, and learn how schools partner with families and community resources. Interns will develop skills in trauma-informed practice, culturally responsive engagement, assessment, documentation, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
