Opportunity Summary

Become a Tiger Buddy at San Marcos Elementary! This unique mentorship program pairs CSUSM students with elementary "Tigers" to build student confidence through a blend of academic support and social-emotional coaching. As a mentor, you will serve as a consistent role model, helping younger students navigate peer relationships, develop clear communication habits, and discover their own leadership potential.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Through the Tiger Buddies program, CSUSM students will: Mentor Leadership Skills: Learn to identify and cultivate leadership traits in younger students through collaborative activities. Develop Coaching Techniques: Gain experience in facilitating "Social-Emotional Learning" (SEL), helping children manage emotions and build healthy peer relationships. Refine Interpersonal Communication: Practice adapting communication styles to effectively connect with, motivate, and support elementary-aged learners. Role Model Professionalism: Understand the impact of consistent, positive adult-student relationships on a child’s academic confidence.

Opportunity Training

To ensure you feel prepared to lead, we provide a structured support system: Orientation (45 Minutes): A foundational session led by the San Marcos Elementary team covering student safety, school culture, and mentorship boundaries. Supervision & Support: You will be paired with a staff lead to help you integrate into the program and meet your Tiger Buddies. A Team Lead is on-site at all times to assist. You will also have direct communication channels to the team for any support needed outside of class time. Reflective Feedback: Each session concludes with a debrief. You will also participate in a final check-out interview to reflect on your growth and certify hours.
