This opportunity is for Recreation Therapy internhip students only.
Ability Recreation offers a fully virtual internship designed to provide therapeutic recreation students with meaningful, hands-on learning beyond traditional observation. Under the mentorship of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), interns will strengthen their clinical reasoning by developing treatment plans, writing documentation, designing evidence-based interventions, conducting activity analyses, and contributing to program and curriculum development. Students will also gain valuable insight into private practice, professional ethics, and innovative service delivery while building skills that translate directly to clinical practice. This flexible virtual experience is ideal for students seeking individualized mentorship and practical experience in therapeutic recreation.
- Use field-specific tools, technologies, procedures, or practices.
- Support project planning, implementation, or evaluation activities.
- Develop and/or deliver programs, services, products, or resources.
- Apply the therapeutic recreation process in clinical decision-making.
- Develop measurable treatment goals and intervention plans.
- Utilize evidence-based practice when designing interventions.
- Complete professional documentation using accepted standards.

Students will receive a structured virtual orientation at the start of the internship, followed by ongoing mentorship and task-specific training from a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). The internship follows a scaffolded learning model, beginning with observation and guided practice before progressing to independent application under supervision. As students demonstrate competency, they are gradually given increased responsibility while continuing to receive individualized support and feedback.
Training includes:
Introduction to Ability Recreation's mission, services, and clinical philosophy
Orientation to the therapeutic recreation process and documentation standards
Instruction in evidence-based intervention planning and activity analysis
Guidance in writing assessments, treatment plans, measurable goals, progress notes, and professional documentation
Training in program and curriculum development
Review of ethical practice, confidentiality, and professional communication
Observation of completed examples before completing tasks independently
Individualized feedback on assignments, clinical reasoning, and professional decision-making
Regular supervision meetings for case discussion, reflection, and professional development
Students are expected to complete assigned orientation and training activities before independently performing internship tasks. Ongoing mentorship, supervision, and constructive feedback are provided throughout the placement to support the development of clinical competence, confidence, and professional growth.
- Maintain a private and secure workspace to protect confidential information.
- Use secure internet connections and password-protected devices when accessing internship materials.
- Follow all confidentiality, privacy, and data security requirements.
- Practice proper ergonomic techniques, including appropriate workstation setup and taking regular breaks to reduce eye strain and musculoskeletal discomfort during extended computer use.
