ABOUT
Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) serves girls in K through 6th grades. Our mission is to remove systemic barriers to all girls’ participation in STEM starting in kindergarten, engage them through hands-on learning, increase their positive attitudes toward STEM, and equip them with 21st century skills. Serving schools in the East Bay, SAfG provides hands-on, high quality after school STEM programming to keep girls engaged in STEM for the long term.

DESCRIPTION:
SAfG is seeking an Assistant Teacher for in-person after school classes 3 – 5 days a week throughout the 2021 – 2022 school year. Classes are fun, engaging, project and inquiry-based STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs for K-6th grade girls. Classes are held in-person at school sites in the East Bay (Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Richmond and San Leandro). Assistant Teachers support Head Teachers and serve as critical role models for participants, normalizing the idea of women in STEM and facilitating the development of science identities that reflect their own. SAfG is committed to creating a cohort of instructors that reflect the diversity of the girls in our programming, and prioritizes recruiting, hiring, training, and retaining women of color.

This position reports to the Director of Education and Community Engagement.

COMPENSATION:
Position Type: Part-time, non-exempt hourly employment from September 2021 – May 2022 with the opportunity to extend to the summer and following school year. (12 - 20 hrs per week)
Salary: $17 - $20 per hour (dependent on experience)

MAJOR DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS:
Duties:
Assist in the teaching/delivery of project-based STEM activities on site at elementary schools in the East Bay (includes kitting, set up and clean up).
Promote the mission and scientist mindset of SAfG in each class
Work collaboratively with the head teacher, role models and volunteers in the classroom.
Assist in the organization and kitting of STEM supplies and kits at the main office and storage facility.
Attend all-staff meetings and programmatic meetings as scheduled.
Work independently with students in small groups

Responsibilities:
Provide leadership and positivity and help individual girls develop as leaders.
Create a safe, respectful youth development-based learning environment.
Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds with different needs (e.g., family situations, ages, learning styles).
Ability to bring compassion, understanding and respect to the girls and families we serve.
Maintain organization of physical or virtual classroom and communal supplies and paperwork.
Effectively utilize prep time to prepare for activities and classroom observations.
Perform other duties as assigned in person or in virtual workspace.

Expectations:
Ability to work 3 – 5 days a week for 27 weeks during the 2021 – 2022 school year.
Ability to work in-person at schools throughout the East Bay (Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Richmond and San Leandro).
Availability to work after school hours (2:30-5:30pm for most days and 12:45 - 3:30pm for early dismissal days).
Possibility to work additional hours for kitting, organizing, and sorting STEM supplies and other projects as needed.
The delivery model and time of day may be adjusted based on recommendations and requirements from the school district and/or local public health departments.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications:
Working towards Bachelor’s degree (in STEM or Education field a plus)
Experience working with children and building relationships with girls from underserved backgrounds preferred.
Possess the ability to establish rapport with a wide range of students and create an inclusive learning environment
Commitment to educational equity and programming for girls
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with parents
Initiative to analyze and solve problems
Professionalism and accountability
Ability to maintain an excellent work ethic, a high level of energy and enthusiasm
Experience in emergent curriculum, project-based or inquiry-based learning a plus
Preferred Qualifications:
Fluent in Spanish.

Requirements:
Follow and reinforce regulations around COVID-19 for teaching personnel and students at school sites.
Physical ability to pick up and carry crates (up to 40 lbs) and load/unload and move heavy carts.
Use hands and fingers to help with classroom supplies and operate equipment
Has reliable form of transportation
Must obtain the following clearances: Negative TB Test (within the last 3 years), Department of Justice clearance based on fingerprinting submission, and a background check.
