Who We Are A grassroots movement of young people providing free online tutoring to under-resourced elementary school students. We began the movement after seeing millions of students falling behind during the pandemic and knew we had to help. The long term effects of covid learning loss will be felt for years to come and we are at a crucial point to get them back on track. Step Up Tutoring’s mission is to drive student success in under-resourced communities by providing free online tutoring and mentorship to 3rd - 6th grade students within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). What will I be doing? Step Up Tutors conduct one-on-one virtual tutoring sessions at least twice a week for 45 minutes with their student/s. Tutors provide homework support in Math and English, while also providing mentorship. Tutors not only support students academically, but also provide encouragement and inspiration. Students with mentors are 2x more likely to attend college. Changing lives, one student at a time. Additionally, work-study students are trained to become cohort leaders for other tutors. This is an important leadership role fulfilled by mentoring, supporting, and creating a sense of community for incoming tutors.
Students will practice skills of reliability, communicating, mentoring, teaching, coaching, motivating and time management. Students will share their learned knowledge and share it with the kids who need their support. They will show leadership, inspiration, mentorship and change the trajectory of lives. Underserved students are twice as likely to attend college if they have a mentor.
All training will be provided virtually through two 45 minute learning modules and one one hour live training. Additional training available as needed along with office hours and online resources.
Both parties sign waivers. A private email, Zoom account and Remind app for texting will be given to each tutor to protect their privacy. Students also sign waivers and will have another adult present with them during tutoring sessions. All work is done remotely.
