8 service learner spots
Students will be required to complete Unexploded Munitions Identification (UXO) training prior to starting service learning hours (online training course, takes about 30 min).
On site, students will be trained in the point-intercept vegetative transect method, field GIS and GPS use, field data collection, plant identification, safe implementation of management actions (weeding, mulching, etc.) and land management strategies.
There will always be at least one BLM staff member accompanying students into the field. BLM staff members will provide transportation, site safety expertise, equipment, and leadership to service learners. Our goal is for service learners to have as much hands on experience as possible while BLM staff members provide safety supervision, general direction, and plant identification assistance. Thus students can learn and engage with the monument while remaining safe and productive. We will also provide information on weather conditions, appropriate clothing, and safety procedures.
Students are required to take Unexploded Munitions Identification training online prior to starting service hours. While the BLM staff provides transportation, this will involve being in a single car with others for the ~20 min ride.
This position also involves walking up/down inclines, walking over unpaved terrain, and being outdoors for extended periods of time.
