Opportunity Summary 

The Bookstore Intern will gain knowledge and first-hand experience regarding how a nonprofit arts organization with a small business component brings resources and access to an underserved community. Supervised by the Bookstore & Operations Director, the intern will provide administrative and project assistance to bookstore staff. The intern’s primary responsibilities will relate to assisting with the creation of an updated business plan, grant research, and outreach/marketing support for the bookstore, providing opportunities to broaden skills important to nonprofit sustainability, such as relationship-building, writing, and small business development.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

The supervisor will collaborate with each student to set personalized goals and expectations. Key areas of focus will include the fundamentals of running a nonprofit and small business, gaining an in-depth understanding of the bookselling and publishing industry, and exploring how grassroots nonprofits operate. Students will also develop practical skills, such as administrative and clerical expertise, including managing schedules, organizing files, handling correspondence, data entry, maintaining inventory systems, and supporting event planning and coordination. These experiences will equip students with valuable, real-world skills.

Opportunity Training 

Students will receive comprehensive training to perform their responsibilities, including reviewing the employee handbook and bookstore guide both independently and with their supervisor or lead. They will also watch a documentary about the organization to gain a deeper understanding of its mission and operations. In addition, students will receive hands-on training, such as operating the register and learning other essential tasks. This combination of written resources and practical experience will provide a well-rounded foundation for success in the role.

The safety and well-being of students are a top priority. The workspace will be kept tidy, with proper lighting. Students will receive clear instructions on emergency procedures, including evacuation routes and first aid resources. Guidance will be provided on safely handling equipment or materials. For remote work, students will have the necessary tools and resources. An open-door policy will support mental health, and current public health guidelines, including COVID-19 precautions, will be followed to ensure a safe and secure environment.
