Fort Ord National Monument Weed Crew Assistant - Bureau of Land ManagementAt — Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
Join the Fort Ord National Monument Weed Crew for the semester in removing invasive weeds!
This semester we will focus on presence/absence checks and removal of French Broom (Genista monspessulana). The weed crew has over 1,000 sites to work at this season so you'll get plenty of field time. We will use GPS enabled tablets to navigate to known sites. We'll take new points if new infestations are found. After identifying the invasive weeds we will remove them with weed wrenches or a similar tool.
We are looking to have three students on Tuesdays from 12:30 - 4:30pm and three students on Wednesdays from 12:30 - 4:30pm. Thank you for your interest!

Students will also be trained in the removal of weeds using hand pulling techniques and tools like weed wrenches and Pulaskis.
Students will be working with and supervised by Bureau of Land Management weed crew staff during each visit to the service learning site. They will be able to ask questions and get feedback in the field from the person leading them in the field as well as the crew supervisor before and after each visit.
KNOWN HAZARDS: This placement requires working with hazardous materials, heavy equipment, construction equipment, heights, or heavy machinery.
Fort Ord National Monument is part of a former military base and students may encounter unexploded munitions during their time volunteering. Students will receive training on their first day to recognize, retreat, and report dangerous munitions and will always be accompanied by a trained BLM weed crew member while volunteering.
