Opportunity Summary 

Long Beach Gray Panthers work in 18 different areas concerning Older Adults. Internships consist of leadership development, community engagement, understanding of the importance of nonprofits, grantwriting, and advocacy education. Student may choose an are of interest within the 18 areas we work. We also supply a framework for working with Older Adults.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Students will learn:
1. What leadership is and how to accept it
2. What community engagement is and how they can participate and why it is important to participate
3. The value of nonprofits to our community and how they are managed
4. Go through a two-hour session on grantwriting and help write a grant if they have sufficient hours
5. Learn about advocacy and how to do it effectively and why it is important
6. What does it mean to age and how to preplan to do it the way that is successful for you

Opportunity Training 

We offer weekly two-hour zoom trainings plus provide reading and video resource lists to extend their learning. They select a personal project from a series of topics and decide which of the learning opportunities they want to include in their personal project. We also have them listen to a City Council meeting, and we have a discussion around what was presented. We teach them to advocate if they wish to speak on an issue. If there are lobbying opportunities available, we have them attend and debrief on the experience.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

All operations adhere to the highest levels of safety. We have PPE for students if needed and funding to cover any expenses they might incur.
