Program Description:
Children’s Specialized Services provides mental health services to special education students who are eligible for mental health services through the IEP process. Services include individual, group and family therapy, assessment and case management.There are multiple school sites in Castro Valley, Hayward, San Lorenzo and Oakland where students could provide services;
Clientele Served:
Students between the ages of 5 and 19 who are eligible for special education and have mental health issues that are interfering in their education. Clients come from a broad range of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Approximately half of the clients we serve are eligible for Medi-Cal and we have a significant number of clients who are undocumented and uninsured.
Issues Program Addresses:
A broad range of mental health issues are addressed including trauma, depression and anxiety with the goal of restoring functioning to a level that allows the client to benefit from his or her education.
Intern Assignments:
There are 3 or 4 positions available in the schools for the 2013/2014 school year. The interns would be responsible for providing therapeutic services to 3-5 students which could include individual, group and family therapy and case management. The intern would also be responsible for coordination of the students’ care with the school district and other involved professionals including attending IEP meetings and treatment conferences. Interns will be assigned 3-4 ERMHS assessments which are psychosocial assessments.
Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:
There is a weekly intern training seminar that covers a variety of topics (e.g. psychopharmacology, working with school systems, play therapy, working with specific client populations) as well as a weekly intern consultation group that is facilitated by an LCSW.

Interns are eligible go apply for a stipend worth up to $6000 through a competitive process.

Interns are required to fill out County paperwork, obtain a medical clearance and be fingerprinted prior to starting.
