Program description:
The Public Defender recently hired a Transitional Age Youth/Education attorney. It is clear that that our office would benefit greatly from having a social work intern work with this attorney and this population. The MSW or BASW would work directly with this TAY population and advocate with the client regarding housing, education and employment. AMany youths who are transitioning form foster care and juvenile justice system have access to AB 12 funding. However, our probation department appears to be so overwhelmed and are unable to provide effective case management, coordination of services or advocate for appropriate housing. Furthermore, our office utilizes a holistic approach to working with the transitional youth clients as many of them have experienced significant trauma which often makes it difficult to navigate many county and governmental systems. An MSW or BASW intern would have the opportunity to engage in direct client services, provide crisis interventions and utilize several theoretical approaches to assisting this young population become more self-sufficient and better prepared as they navigate their lives. I believe that a first year Title IV-E student would be a perfect fit as student would be working with a multidisciplinary team that includes the juvenile court system, school system, juvenile probation and advocacy.
