Program Description:
Intern are placed at one of 7 or 8 elementary or middle schools in Oakland Unified School District.  Interns will provide individual and small group counseling sessions, assist teachers in the classroom, assist with children in crisis situations and participate in campus-wide activities.  Interns are provided extensive training and on-going support.

Clientele Served
Children k – 8th grade and their families.

Issues Program Addresses:
Working with children who are experiencing academic or behavioral difficulties, assessing for child abuse, collaborating with parents, teachers and outside providers and crisis intervention.  Interns learn about confidentiality as it applies on a school campus,  equity issues in urban public education, special education and advocacy work.  We spend a great deal of time looking at children in their environments as we begin the assessment process and decide how to best provide support for the children and their families.

Intern Assignments:
Placements are at 7 or 8 elementary and middle schools in Oakland Unified School District.

Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:
Weekly individual supervision meetings, twice a month group supervision meetings with all interns – these meetings will either be facilitated by me or an outside provider on a variety of topics such as :  beginning play therapy, using sand play, crisis response work, working with gang members and their families,  assessing for suicidality, doing case presentation and facilitating termination with clients.

There are also opportunities to attend outside trainings that fall within placement days.

Other Special Placement Procedures or Requirements (Including Dates of Internship, Special Application Forms and Deadlines): Internship runs from September through May.  Interns must get fingerprinted and have current TB test.
