Program Description:OIHS is a public school that serves 100% recently-arrived English Language learning immigrant students. As we grow into a Full Service Community School, we will deepen and expand upon our support programs for students and their families. This includes mental health programs with Asian Community mental Health Services, health services in conjunction with Oakland Tech's TechniClinic, and referrals to other outside services.

Clientele Served:Newly-arrived immigrant youth & their families. Students come from over 30 countries and speak a combined 40+ languages. Over 95% receive free & reduced lunch

Issues Program Addresses:Support services (including referrals for health, mental health, behavioral, family support, social services and other programs) to help students adapt to life in Oakland, succeed in school, and prepare for their futures in life, work and continuing education.

Intern Assignments:Social services applications, follow-up and casemanagement (particularly medi-cal), fielding referrals for mental health counselors, connecting students and families to support services outside of school, developing referral partnerships with additional outside service providers.

Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:Learning about U.S. school system and school-based mental health services; professional development opportunities with school teachers & staff
