Program Description:

Year Up is an award-winning national 501(c)3 organization striving to close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the skills, experience and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education. Through a one-year intensive training program, Year Up provides urban young adults ages 18-24 with a unique combination of hands-on technical and professional skills, college credit, and corporate internships.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:

Economic justice. Work force development. Professional skills training. Technology training. Customer service skills.

Populations and Clientele Served:

18-14 year olds. Must have high school diploma or GED. Must have an interest in working in the field of technology.

Types of Services Offered by the Program:

Training in computer technology. Internship experience in corporate work settings. Case management. Mentoring. Networking with potential corporate employers.

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Admissions

  • Conduct one-on-one interviews and assessments of prospective students
  • Collaborate with the Admissions team throughout the admissions process to identify prospects who will be successful students in the Year Up program
  • Proactively connect prospective students with resources (e.g. healthcare, child care, legal representation) that will ease their transition into Year Up

Direct Services

  • Connect students to appropriate available resources and help them apply for assistance programs
  • Provide one-on-one brief counseling and support as needed and appropriate for students
  • Co-facilitate group work and conduct supportive or psycho educational groups as needed
  • Provide support to staff as they work with students who need services support identified through the admissions process or in the course of their involvement in the Year Up program
  • Build relationships with students both through individual meetings/sessions and being visible during lunch, breaks, and in the classroom, when appropriate
  • Attend weekly meetings with staff advisors and Program Managers to discuss the progress of students, and to develop interventions and direction, as appropriate
  • Enter student services engagement data into Salesforce.com and examine  trends and issues in the community/world that may be affecting our students

Program Development

  • Participate in cross-site discussions with other Year Up sites 
  • Build/refine our a data base community organizations and social service agencies around mental health, housing, pregnancy/parenting, financial services, family issues, substance use, etc. so that they are available for student use as needed
  • Add to and update a centralized resource guide for students
  • Participate actively as a member of the Students Services team, contributing ideas and recommendations for improving processes
  • Other duties as assigned

Site Team/Learning Community Member

  • Serve as an advisor/mentor for a small number of current students
  • Join and sometimes facilitate weekly group sessions with students
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings
