Program Description:
The Wellness Center at Drake High School aims to improve the health, well-being, and educational outcomes of students through the coordination of mental health, sexual health, health, and substance abuse prevention. Our program is centrally located on campus and works from a model of inclusivity and youth development. Some students are seen regularly for 1:1 therapeutic sessions or groups, but others may access services simply by dropping in for support as needed, or in a leadership role capacity. We also do Wellness related education in classrooms and on the courtyard during lunch or break-time.
|
Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:
Mental health, health, sexual health, and substance abuse prevention issues relevant to the student body of Drake High School.
|
Populations and Clientele Served:
Services are available to all students attending Drake High School. Drake is located in San Anselmo, CA, a predominately white, liberal, high SES community in Marin county of about 1100 students. Primary issues affecting this student community are stress around school performance, substance abuse, and anxiety. In general, the school is a very warm, friendly environment and a pleasurable place to work.
|
Types of Services Offered by the Program:
-One-to-one counseling
-Group counseling
-Classroom Presentations/Education
-Outreach around health and Wellness issues
-Alternative supportive programming such as yoga, meditation, etc.
-Sexual Health services on-site
-Safe place to de-stress and get support, or relax while on campus
|
Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:
The majority of the intern’s time would be spent counseling and case managing individual clients, as assigned by the Wellness Coordinator. There would also be opportunities to run groups, participate in student outreach and education, and/or attend student support meetings with other service providers.
|
Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:
Our school community is currently focused on bringing Restorative Practices into the community. An intern interested in Restorative Practices could certainly get involved and learn more about how RP works in the school setting.
Interns will also be invited to participate in professional development opportunities that are open to all support staff on TUHSD campuses.
