Program Description:
AGENCY DESCRIPTION: 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic has provided mental, physical and sexual health services to the youth (age 12-24) of the Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP) community for over 10 years. The clinic is staffed by the SF Department of Public Health and consists of Pediatricians, Nurse Practitioners, a Social Worker and a Psychologist. 3rd Street is proud to say that it has never strayed far from its original vision; to be a place where young people learn to be healthy in their minds, bodies, and spirits, while advocating for a healthy community around them. The clinic serves over 1,000 youth every year through health and wellness programs, and through mental health services. We make contact with BVHP youth wherever they are; at our center, at their schools, and at a host of community events. In addition to individual and couples counseling services, 3rd Street offers a myriad of youth development programming which blends mental health support, health education and social services. MSW PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: 3rd Street’s MSW Internship Program trains 1-2 MSW students to become proficient at providing culturally-sensitive case management and psychological services to youth (age 12-24) from the BVHP. Students’ main function is to serve as a Wellness Coordinator to 3rd Street’s Youth Programs. The MSW interns will provide supportive case management and short-term counseling services, as well as make referrals to long-term therapy. In addition, they will conduct intakes, facilitate groups (Seeking Safety, Dialectical Behavior Therapy & other Skills-Based Groups) and provide Wellness Checks. MSW Interns will receive weekly individual supervision which will focus on their case management cases and can choose to join an optional 3 hour case conference and didactic training on either Tuesday or Thursday morning from 8-11, which focuses on psychotherapy cases and the following psychology topics: Diagnosis & Case Formulation, Issues of Diversity, Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy, Trauma & Domestic Violence, Substance Abuse Treatment, Attachment Theory & Emotional Development and Personality and Identity Formation. MSW Interns become familiar with and gain experience in the following Evidenced-Based Practices: Seeking Safety, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Trauma-Focused CBT. |
Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:
1-2 MSW Interns provide culturally-sensitive case management and psychological services to youth (age 12-24) in 3rd Street’s Youth Programs. Youth are primarily African American and Latino who live in BVHP. They typically struggle with issues of trauma, poverty, long-standing racism and economic oppression. Case Management aims to improve academic, occupational and family functioning; Wellness Checks, group counseling and individual counseling aim to provide emotional support, reduce risky behaviors, teach coping skills and improve overall emotional expression and relationships. |
Populations and Clientele Served:
MSW Interns will work with adolescents (age 12-24) in 3rd Street’s Youth Programs. Youth are primarily African American and Latino who live in BVHP. They typically struggle with issues of trauma, poverty, long-standing racism and economic oppression. |
Types of Services Offered by the Program:
1-2 MSW Interns will provide both Case Management and Psychological services to 3rd Street youth. Interns will conduct Intakes, provide Wellness Checks and Individual Counseling, as well as Group Counseling (DBT & Seeking Safety). |
Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:
Interns will be required to provide services on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening (3:30-7pm) during 3rd Street Youth Center’s evening youth programming. In addition, they will be required to meet for weekly individual supervision with one of 3rd Street’s Social Workers (MSW). Interns will be required to hold a caseload of case management clients, as well as provide emotional supportive counseling to selective clients. Caseload size is based on the university’s training requirements, as well as by agency need. |
Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:
3rd Street is unique in that it provides youth programming, medical services, and mental health services, both in-house and on an outreach basis. In addition, 3rd Street employs both non-profit and county staff, as well as contracts 8-10 pre-doctoral/MFT psychology students. Consequently, MSW Interns are able to work in a myriad of different systems, while collaborating with a diverse staff. MSW Interns are encouraged to attend staff meetings and additional training is continually provided on Trauma-Sensitive Care and Diversity on both the non-profit side, as well as the county end. |
