The outpatient Department of General Internal Medicine internship engages an MSW student to gain experience with providing information and referral; conducting biopsychosocial assessments for community and medical linkages; and responding to the varied needs of patients seen in UCSF’s largest outpatient practice for adults.  Patients are referred by primary care providers to DGIM social workers and interns in response to patients’ chronic or acute medical and environmental concerns that impact health and health care.  This position serves patients across the spectrum seen at DGIM and frequently assists patients and families who experience concerns associated with aging, isolation, substance abuse, abuse/neglect, poverty, housing, and mental illness.

The outpatient Department of Center for Geriatric Care internship engages an MSW student to gain experience with providing information and referral; conducting biopsychosocial assessments for community and medical linkages; and responding to the varied needs of patients seen in UCSF outpatient practice for older adults 70 years or older.  Patients are referred by primary care providers to Center for Geriatric Care social workers and interns in response to patients’ chronic or acute medical and environmental concerns that impact health and health care.  This placement is on the UCSF Institute on Aging campus.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:

Wide range of concerns: referrals to community resources: substance abuse, mental health, homecare, hospice, domestic violence, LGBT related issues, HIV programs, Senior programs, etc.

Types of Services Offered by the Program:

Both practices of Primary Medical Care. DGIM services 28,000 patients and the Center for Geriatric Care has 800 patients.

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:

DGIM: This internship allows an intern to assist patients with a wide variety of illnesses and life concerns as addressed in an outpatient general medicine setting.  The DGIM intern assists patients in person and on the phone, and is an integral member of the care team.  Opportunities for participation in special projects that support Social Work and DGIM exist as a subset of this internship. 

Geriatrics: This position frequently assists patients and families who experience concerns associated with aging, isolation, caregiver burn-out, abuse/neglect, poverty, housing, and mental illness.  The social work intern will function as a member of the multidisciplinary team.  The CGC intern assists patients in person and on the phone, and is an integral member of the care team.  Opportunities for participation in special projects that support Social Work and CGC exist as a subset of this internship.

Opportunities to develop and co-lead Support Group; visit other programs at UCSF with Social Work Supervisors; develop specialized social work resource directories to be used throughout the Medical Center (past students wrote Transgender Resource Directory, Senior Center Directory, etc.)
