Program Description:

Rising Harte Wellness Center (RHWC) is a school linked health and wellness clinic.  RHWC provides medical, dental and audiology services as well as providing health education and opportunities for youth development to the populations served.  Staffing at RHWC is comprised of a Nurse Practitioner, a Dentist, a Clinic Coordinator, a Hearing Specialist, 2 Behavioral Health Clinicians and a Program Specialist.  The main goal of RHWC is to provide free and confidential services to Bret Harte Middle School (BHMS) students, their families, TAY and the community.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:

The primary issues that RHWC is focused on is helping to reduce unequal access and health care services, and to improve the overall health (academic, emotional and mental) for youth who are underserved at BHMS and within the surrounding community.

Populations and Clientele Served:

Students and TAY from low income families, ages 12 – 25. 

Types of Services Offered by the Program:

RHWC provides first aid, medical/dental exams, hearing screening and testing, health education and behavioral health care primarily at the center and/or at Bret Harte Middle School. Services are provided in groups (e.g. Health Education) and individually based on need. Specifically, behavioral health services are evidenced informed and the duration of service in this area is typically short term.

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:

  1. Build Youth Development programming which includes developing Outreach and Engagement Strategies, development of a Health Ed Curriculum and group facilitation.
  2. Psycho-social Group for New Comer students with Health Ed added to it.
  3. Administering the Staying Healthy Screening for registered clinic users.

Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:

  • Shadowing Clinic Coordinator to learn more about health clinic operations
  • Participation in agency trainings
