Organization Description

Health Initiatives for Youth is a multicultural organization whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of underserved young people through innovative youth leadership, popular education and advocacy, in pursuit of multi-level social change. We work with youth age 12-24 in a variety of settings around sexual health, substance abuse prevention, self-esteem, gender, and sexuality. Primarily we serve LGBTQIQ youth, youth of color, and youth from disadvantaged communities. We also run a Drop In Space for LGBTQIQ Youth and allies in West Oakland where we offer support for basic needs alongside a variety of programming.

Program Information

Interns will be able to participate fully in three of our programs: FABULOUS is a six week HIV intervention and substance abuse prevention program that targets LGBTQIQ street involved and homeless youth age 18-24. An intern working on this project would be expected to be present at weekly workshops, help with preparation and curriculum development prior to workshops, and actively outreach to participants. Queer/Trans* Youth Drop In Space - We currently run a drop in space for LGBTQIQ Youth in West Oakland that is open one night a week but will soon be expanded. Programming at the space includes social support groups, workshops, movie nights, open mic nights, queer cultural events, health workshops, and youth development activities. This intern would be expected to help with planning and outreach for events and programs as well as staffing the space during open hours.
