Organization Description

The overall mission of the ASPN Health Equity Internship Program is to create a highly qualified diverse public health workforce. In this competitive paid internship program, ASPHN staff matches students with agency preceptors located locally or remotely. Remote/virtual internship opportunities available with agencies are located all throughout the U.S. with partnering agencies. Students work on health equity project topics that can include but are not limited to minority health, cardiovascular disease, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, physical activity and nutrition, injury prevention, health disparities, and more.

Program Information

The student will participate in a 12-week health equity internship program. During this program, the student will be planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion and education programs. They may also develop health education materials or information for varied audiences keeping in mind the literacy levels of a population. The student will complete weekly reporting in alignment with health education standards and responsibilities. The student will complete weekly reporting in alignment with the essentials of public health service. The student will complete a final report and present an internship poster. The student will participate in weekly professional/career development trainings. The student will meet on a regular basis with project staff to ensure the timely completion of projects.

By the end of this opportunity, the student intern will have learned:

Increased their knowledge on public health policies and programs that implement health equity principles. Garnered skills and hands-on training in public health, health education, and promotion. Understand and practice professionalism in the workplace by interacting with internship staff and other interns on a daily basis, meeting to obtain feedback from project staff, and practicing effective communication. Increased knowledge and skills on the related topic area of focus based on student interest or partnering organization need.
