Organization Description

The Museum documents and celebrates seafaring animals from earliest times to the present. These include mascots and companions as well as working animals aboard ship or along riverbanks and shores. Our work includes collecting, publishing and sharing visual evidence of maritime pets by means of exhibits, lectures and workshops.

Program Information

Student will be provided with digital files of historic and art images, including photographs, dating back at least 2 millennia. Task involves sorting the images into groups by date, subject matter, medium, place of origin. Ultimate goal will be to make our collection accessible on our website to researchers. Students will have learned:

  • Critical thinking skills involved in narrowing down dates and times of image creation when not known
  • Curatorial/collections management skills in deciding how to sort the material for ease of access by others
  • Potential for creating a database for researchers
  • Opportunity for student to describe the collection for optimal availabilty
  • Opportunity for student to describe the personal, practical and historical impact of the collection
