Program Information Student intern will learn about medically related social services. Students are exposed to medical terminology and diagnosis. Skilled nursing is the next step down from hospitalization where patients receive rehabilitation services toward being able to return to the community. Skilled nursing facilities are also a place where people receive long-term care services. Skilled nursing offers an intern the opportunity to learn about discharge planning and assisting residents to adjust to placement if the goal is long-term care and the facility will be their new home. Students complete assessments, care plans, social histories, and progress notes. Students help to plan and develop ways to assist residents in the areas of psychosocial well-being, mood, and behavior. Students will also be learning about the administration and regulations surrounding the use of psychotropic medications in the older adult populations.
The student intern should be flexible and comfortable with approaching the public in order to interview and complete social histories. Students should also feel comfortable working with physically and mentally compromised individuals. Students should be organized and have a desire to work with older adults and medical patients. Students will be working closely with an interdisciplinary team of individuals with varying expertise.
