Program Information

As the most restrictive public school in Butte County, BASES serves students who have an IEP and whose behaviors are such that they are unable to remain on a mainstream campus. The majority of this population have experienced, and are still experiencing, complex and prolonged trauma.

MSW student interns would be involved with the development and implementation of Direct Treatment Protocols, as well as be able to observe IEPS. BSW & MSW students would have the opportunity to observe and implement Positive Behavioral Intervention Services, behavioral management in the classroom environment, and work with a multi-disciplinary team. BSW and MSW student interns will be able to observe organizational development and programatic decisions as BASES continually strives to improve its systems.

Social Work student interns will need to have a comfort in crisis as the students at BASES do have a tendency for intense behaviors. BASES strives for a high structure/high nurture environment, but necessitates flexibility to be able to meet the students' needs. BSW and MSW students who have an interest in developing their knowledge of trauma informed practice, clinical practice in the school setting, and case management skills will benefit from an internship at BASES Learning Center. Students will need to be comfortable with chaotic and unpredictable settings and ahve the ability to maintain their own self-regulation in the midst of a stimulating environment.

Health & Safety

BASES Learning Center has developed multiple strategies to ensure the safety of it's students and staff, yet the students at BASES can become aggressive or assaultive. As with any school based or therapeutic environment with children, there is a chance to be exposed to bodily fluids. BSW and MSW students should be aware that the BASES students use profane and lewd language when escalated and will need to be able to maintain their own self-regulation.
