Organization Description

The mission of the Chico Unified School District, a partnership of students, staff, families and community, is to ensure all students achieve high levels of academic and personal success, contribute to the community and confidently compete in a changing global society by engaging in quality educational programs that address diverse student needs and promote learning throughout life.

Program Information

The McKinney-Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures immediate enrollment and educational stability for homeless children and youth. McKinney-Vento provides federal funding to states for the purpose of supporting district programs that serve homeless students.

The district Homeless and Foster Liaison works closely with the school site Targeted Case Managers, School Administration, District Administration and community agencies to help remove barriers for students to attend school. Social Work interns will get the opportunity to work alongside the Homeless and Foster Liaison and the Targeted Case Managers and learn the support systems set in place in Butte County to help families with school age children. The student intern will have an opportunity to learn case management systems, home visit protocols, be part of the Child and Family Team process, and learn how to coordinate and document services for families. Interns could also have the opportunity to be part of our All Star Parent Program parenting support classes. Interns will help check in with families who are identified as homeless to document need and make appropriate referrals.

The ideal student intern will be able to take initiative and will be organized or will to learn organization. They should be flexible as our days are completely unstructured and vary with student and family needs. It is important to have an intern who has a willingness to ask questions and ask for help when needed.
