Redding STEM Academy

Organization Description

The mission of Redding STEM Academy is to develop curious and academically skilled young people who aspire to be principled and compassionate leaders. Through a rigorous K-8 college preparatory, personalized learning program, with a focus in science, technology, engineering and math, Redding STEM Academy affords its students the experiences, skills, and values that will prepare them for citizenship, high school, college, and global competition in the 21st century. Our programs strive to create students who are self-motivated, competent, lifelong learners.

Program Information

Students completing their practicum at Redding STEM Academy can expect to interract with students grades TK-8th on an individual, small group, and classroom level. Practicum students with work with students experiencing emotional dysregulation, social/peer challenges, and challenging circumstances outside of school that impact their ability to learn. They will have the opportunity to problem solve and team with teachers, working to address student behaviors through a trauma focused lense. Opportunities will also include collaboration with school administration to continue and further develop campus-wide social emotional learning programs, collect and analyze data and implement programs and services in response to data. Practicum students will have the opportunity to team with school staff and parents in student support meetings and to research and become familiar with community and Office of Education resources in order to make appropriate referrals to outside resources for students and families in need. 

A practicum student placed at RSTEM will need to be comfortable working with children, able to stay calm and well regulated in stressful situations dealing with students who are dysregulated, respond to students and families in a professional and empathetic manner, be flexible with schedule changes, willing to truly team with teachers and work cooperatively, maintain healthy professional boundaries and understand confidentiality, be willing to engage in uncomfortable conversations (students experiencing suicidal thoughts or child abuse/neglect), and be comfortable with some unstructured time.
