PAL Mentoring

Organization Description

PAL Mentoring is a quality, fun and content rich, free after school program that teaches prevention, life skills, interpersonal development, and leadership for Tehama County youth ages 7-18 (if still in school).

Program Information

PAL Mentoring is a non-profit youth organization. Serving youth grades K-12 during weekly group sessions. During that time, social emotional and prevention curriculum's are implemented in a fun and engaging ways. A foundation of our program is community service. We offer several different events over the course of the year. Our program uses high school students to serve as peer mentors for elementary students.

Social Work interns would be responsible for managing and developing the peer mentors in addition to supervising during their sessions with elementary students. The goal is to develop the peer mentors by preparing them for college and career. An intern would be able to gain skills in curriculum development and implementation. Being federally funded with multiple grants, this would give experience and education on grant management, application processes and funding research. Customizing our program for the youth we serve, would give interns an opportunity to case manage and connect youth with resources that best serve their needs. Serving as a mentor, the intern will learn the skill set to connect with youth and families to provide the most support. Being a trusted source for youth and families to confide in is essential skill set that will be developed as an intern. Observation and assessment and learning to measure program impact are essential skills that will be gained as an intern. Creating reports and presentations to share with funders and stakeholders are required on a regular basis. As an intern, they will learn and get hands on experience with all aspects of program management and implementation.

The best fit is a student who is self motivated and doesn't hesitate to jump into the chaos and unpredictability of working with children. Being flexible and able to pivot is essential to working with children. As a mentor, it is essential that we be "cheerleaders" for the youth we serve. Being outgoing and willing are necessary for providing the most quality care for the youth we serve. Being a person that is able to connect and create positive relationships is what we are looking for and willing to develop in an intern.
