The Trevor Project

Organization Description

The Trevor Project is the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ+ young people. We provide information & support to LGBTQ+ young people 24/7, all year round.

Program Information

Students will be trained as a crisis counselor in an LGBTQ+ suicide prevention hotline. After training, the majority of the hours will be spent talking to the contacts that reach out to us via Lifeline or Digital platforms.

The student should be/have:

  • cultural humility
  • coachability
  • growth mindset
  • empathy
  • coping skills
  • multitasking skills
  • able to prioritize
  • adaptable/flexible
  • able to adhere to policy/protocol

This is a fully virtual/remote practicum and is open to all levels of social work (BSW, MSW I, MSW II).

The Trevor Project has a practicum/volunteer application and interview process. Please note that Crisis Counselor shifts are scheduled in 3 hour blocks. There are additional macro and research learning experiences associated with this placement opportunity.

Health & Safety

This is a suicide prevention hotline so students might be exposed to conversations about suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, addiction, abuse, sexual violence, bullying, depression, and other mental health crises. Volunteer Crisis Counselors must be prepared to engage in crisis conversations despite the difficult nature of these topics.

Additional requirements and/or considerations
  • Background Check (e.g. fingerprinting/livescan, driving record)
  • Must be 18 or older
