Safe Space Chico

Organization Description

Safe Space Winter Shelter Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing seasonal low-barrier emergency shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness in Chico, California.

Program Information

This placement is for BSW/MSW Foundation year students.

Student interns will be involved in the following activities at Safe Space Chico:

  • Resource mapping for community services
  • Coordination of care between several agencies for people experiencing homelessness
  • Locating services for older adults who are homeless with disabilities
  • Education in developing case plans
  • Compliance with charting for CalAIM Enhanced Care Management clients and Community Supports
  • Basic social service office practices such as chart filing, donation management, fiscal tracking for office expenses, grant management, and grant writing. 

The student intern should be able to handle unpredictable behaviors from clients and guests, have a flexible schedule, able to work independently with minor supervision, have de-escalation skills, understand harm reduction principles, and trauma informed care practices. 

 

Health & Safety

Students will be working with clients with severe mental illness, substance use, dual diagnosis, exposure to bodily fluids.
