School & Community Wellness Team at Spring Valley School

Program Information

This placement is a school-year internship under individual supervision with the purpose of providing experience and guidance to interact with school students in grades TK-3 utilizing a one-on-one, non-directive approach to aid them in their capacity to successfully adjust to the school environment. This will be done through participation in a new program at Spring Valley called the Primary Intervention Program (PIP). Through PIP, the intern will gain experience in holding a caseload of identified students that would benefit from individualized support at the prevention and early intervention levels. The intern will have opportunities to build relationships and connections with BCOE staff implementing PIP at the site. The intern would coordinate and build relationships with students, parents, teachers and staff at the school site. Opportunities to focus on meso/macro levels of change are available through the Community Schools program beginning in Spring of 2025 to conduct community needs and strengths assessments and to support in program coordination and development.

Weekly individual supervision with a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and on-going individual and/or group consultation with professional mental health professionals.

Workdays/hours: The internship is two days a week, eight hours a day and able to accommodate the student’s school schedule. The internship will take place during the school day, with some flexibility in placement start and end time to allow for completion of other tasks related to Community Schools and community coordination.

Stipend: $8,800, with one disbursement at the end of Fall of 2025 and the second disbursement at the end of Spring 2026.

 

Essential Internship Functions:

  • Participates with the Wellness team and key school staff in developing and implementing program practices to support in school adjustment
  • Acts as a mandated reporter for issues with child abuse and neglect
  • Assists in the coordination of program screening processes
  • Provides school-based prevention and early intervention services utilizing the PIP model of one-to-one, child-centered support
  • Manages a case load of identified students that would benefit from prevention and early intervention support
  • Collaborates with students, parents, teachers, school staff and the greater community to identify needs/strengths and beneficial resources
  • Assists with case tracking and coordination of PIP referrals, as well as community referrals at end of child’s participation in PIP
  • Provides consultation of progress in PIP with parents and teachers
  • Participates in relevant professional development training
  • Utilizes both quantitative and qualitative practices to organize, coordinate and facilitate community needs and strengths assessments
  • Collaborates with the Community Schools Coordinator to support with program development and implementation of community schools practices at the school site as time permits
  • Performs other duties as required
